Tanguar haor is a relax tourist place for those who enjoy rainy green hills with waterbody. Tourists like to travel Tanguar haor, ‘Bareker Tila’, ‘Niladri Lake’, ‘Shimul Bagan’ and ‘Jadukata Nodi’ in a row. The places are too close (almost 160 km) to the ‘wettest place on Earth’ named Mawsynram and nearby Cherrapunji of Indian state of Meghalaya. The highest rainfall in the world is recorded here. The places surrounding Tanguar haor are for the rain lover tourists.
Tanguar Haor is located in the Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj District in Bangladesh. The haor is a unique wetland ecosystem in the country. The area of Tanguar haor is about 100 square kilometers. Tanguar haor plays an important role in fish production as it functions as a ‘mother fishery’ for the country.
The Government of Bangladesh declared Tanguar haor as an Ecologically Critical Area in 1999 considering its critical condition as a result of overexploitation of its natural resources. Every winter the haor is home to about 200 types of migratory birds. There are more than 140 species of fresh water fish in the haor.
