Before declaring the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area in 1860 the area was known as Karpas Mahal. Bandarban and Khagrachhari were appeared as individual districts in 1981 and 1983 respectively; and the rest of CHT was remained under the district Rangamati. Among 64 districts of Bangladesh Rangamati is the largest. Rangamati has its border with India and Myanmar. It is a place of various tribal inhabitants. The Kaptai Lake – a man-made lake to produce country’s only one hydroelectric plant – is situated in Rangamati.
Rangamati is place having high cultural values of various tribal groups especially Chakma and Tripura. There is well known to the tourists for its breathtaking natural views over the Kaptai. The major tourist attractions include the Chakma Rajbari (Royal House of Chakma Circle), Rajbana Vihara, Hanging Bridge Way, Shuvolong Water Spring and the Kaptai. Most of the places need a ride on boat.
The Chakma Rajbari (Royal House) is about 6 km away from main city point of Rangamati. The king of Chakma Circle Raja Tridiv Roy constructed the house in 1960 as the earlier palace went under water due to commissioning of Kaptai dam. Now it is a tourist attraction here. The Rajabana Vihara, an adjacent vihara is another tourist attraction of Rangamati. In 1974, the Chakma Royal Family under the guidance of Rajmata (Queen) Arati Roy and her son Barrister Devasish Roy (now, Circle Chief & Chakma King), invited Venerable Sadhanananda Mahathera (also known as Banabhante) to come up to Rangamati for the greater universal welfare. When Banabhante agreed to stay at Rangamati in 1974, the Rajbana Vihara was established and now it exists after many years of successive developments. Another significant tourist place is the Hanging Bridge of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (Bangladesh Trourist Corporation).
The view of the Kapati Lake is heart touching. Over the lake a journey to the Shuvolong Water Spring by boat takes about one and half an hour. The Kaptail Lake is a man-made lake to establish the first hydroelectric plant of the country.
